Stephanie Meyer, J.K Rowling and Christopher Paolini are all household names. They have different tastes, interests, hobbies, friends and backgrounds. But they all are linked inseparably by one thing: their writing.
I am sure, my readers, that you all know the names of these three successful authors. I am also sure that your opinions may vary as to whether or not they are worth a second thought. I know people that idealize these authors, and i also know people that are... less than generous where these celebrities are concerned.
Let us look at the facts: Christopher Paolini is worth 67 million USD and is the author of the popular Inheritance trilogy turned cycle. JK Rowling is the famous author of Harry Potter. She is worth about 1 BILLION USD.
Stephanie Meyer is the latest sensation with her publication of the Twilight series and is rumored to be worth well over 100 million dollars.
The fame and fortune that follow these authors around is amazing. It seems almost surreal how many people want to meet these authors or aspire to be just like them. Yet that is how it is.
Now many of my contemporaries are less than impressed by these authors and their achievements, in fact some of the bloggers are outright hostile where these authors are concerned.
People claim that CP is a plagiarist, who knows a few big words and uses metaphors to distract the readers from the outright theft he is doing of the written word.
They claim that SM is as original as a cardboard box at Christmas time.
And (not as much as the others) they say JK Rowling commanded a poor knowledge of the English language and is nowhere near worth the attention and money that is being thrown her way.
Here are my thoughts on the subject:
CP is a very talented, very intelligent young man with a brilliant future ahead of him. He used archetypes and therefore is called a plagiarist. However, one could easily say the same thing of JRR TOlkien, as he definitely wasn't the first one to use the High fantasy archetype. Paolini made the mistake of naming his protagonist Eragon, which sounds a lot like LOTR main character Aragorn. But... COMMON! The roles of these characters are so diverse that i cannot believe people even brought it up.
As for Jk Rowling... she is an author beyond belief. She is a STORY TELLER, not necessarily a literature writer as John Steinbeck was. Her stories are genius.
Stephanie Meyer... well she was original to a degree, used OK language and diction. But her story and character manipulation was INCREDIBLE!
So don't hate on these authors without cause, of course they are probably not worth the fame and fortune they recieve... what celebrity is?? Let them alone and read a book that you actually enjoy.
